Innovating Neonatal Eye Care for Early Intervention.

In April 2019, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, visited India as Vice-Patron of The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, highlighting efforts to combat diabetic retinopathy and preventable blindness in preterm infants. This collaboration, in partnership with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), expanded the retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening across key hospitals caring for newborns.

To fight preventable blindness, we delivered 80 3nethra classic HD devices across India for diabetic retinopathy and 25 3nethra neo devices for ROP screening, improving early detection and care nationwide. At Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad, which cares for over 10,000 preterm babies annually, these efforts transformed ROP screening by enabling early detection and supporting timely intervention. Before 2015, the hospital lacked these services, but with the introduction of our devices and continued support, ROP screening became an essential part of neonatal care.

As part of these initiatives, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, delivered two 3nethra neo devices to Niloufer and Gandhi hospitals. Additionally, the Diamond Jubilee Trust facilitated the distribution of eight more devices across India, further expanding access to early diagnosis and treatment.
